OUR MISSION

“Millburn for Climate Action” is a volunteer group that works to motivate the community towards building a greener and sustainable future. Our goal is to engage all residents, students, businesses and administrators to participate in conversations and actions that drive constructive policy changes to reduce our town’s carbon footprint, and restore and protect our natural resources. We work to make  Millburn an Earth-aware community and encourage individual and collective action to that end.

OUR STORY

Millburn for Climate Action began in September 2019 with a simple conversation.

A few residents wanted to show solidarity with Greta Thunberg’s Climate Week march in New York City. Instead of organizing a rally, we chose something different: we hosted a town hall at the Bauer Community Center and invited residents — especially students — to share their ideas on climate action.

With only a few days of word-of-mouth outreach, the room filled. Children as young as six stood up to speak passionately about plastic pollution and marine life. Neighbors discussed native plants, waste reduction, and practical solutions for our town. What began as an impromptu gathering quickly became something much larger — a community movement grounded in optimism, science, and civic engagement.

That evening became the foundation of Millburn for Climate Action.

What We Do

For the past six years, we have worked as an all-volunteer, community-driven organization focused on education, awareness, and practical action. Our approach is pragmatic and local. We focus on actions that make Millburn cleaner, healthier, and more resilient — today and for future generations. We:

  • Communicate, educate and share ideas to live more sustainably through forums and annual displays for Earth Day and Rocktoberfest

  • Organize native plant swaps and help create native gardens in our community and schools to restore biodiversity and support pollinators

  • Host Halloween and Diwali costume swaps to reduce textile waste,  and  organized a sustainable fashion show on Earth Day

  • Lead community cleanup drives on our streets and remove invasive species from our green spaces

  • Provide refillable water stations at events like Strawberry Festival, Rocktoberfest and Library events to cut single-use plastic waste

  • Participate actively in the Township’s food waste recycling program and promote backyard composting

  • Support Millburn Green Team to achieve Sustainable Jersey certification and Environmental Commission in building support for its initiatives

  • Engage with candidates and elected members for Millburn TC and other committees to advocate or common-sense environmental policies, and have helped pass ordinances restricting use of single-use plastics and gas leaf blowers

  • Engage with Millburn Schools BOE to advance climate education and programming through Earth Day events and actively volunteer with PTOC

  • Organize and run Environmental challenge for the Millburn Ed Foundation STEAMfest

Who We Are

We are entirely volunteer-run and open to all residents. Our members include professors, scientists, economists, entrepreneurs, Wall Street professionals, CPAs, homemakers, students, and parents. What unites us is not politics or ideology, but a shared belief that Millburn should be a safe, healthy, and sustainable community.

We are not a special interest group. We are neighbors working together to protect the place we call home. Millburn for Climate Action exists because ordinary residents decided that even small, local actions matter. And we continue because community-driven solutions work.

If you care about Millburn’s future, we invite you to join us.
